The Munupi family, Traditional Owners of Pirlangimpi (formerly Garden Point) signed their 99-year Township Lease in 2017. Located on Melville Island next to the Aspley Strait, Pirlangimpi has a rich history and lays claim to be the Tiwi Islands industrial hub with the deep water Port Melville within the Township Lease boundary.
OTL works in partnership with the Munupi Traditional Owners, through the Consultative Forum to realise their aspirations for Pirlangimpi now and into the future. This includes providing support to build their commercial capability to understand the options available for the economic and social investment of their rental income stream.
To do this, the Munupi Consultative Forum has established a Working Group to assess opportunities and provide advice back to the Consultative Forum to assist in decision making. Opportunities include re-establishing the Fishing Lodge business and expanding the tourism offering, office and staff accommodation for service providers and other businesses, and enterprises linked to the Port activity.
As with other Township Lease communities, OTL is facilitating a master planning process. This will guide future development within the Township. OTL’s Engagement Team meet regularly with the Working Group to discuss these potential businesses and social infrastructure in Pirlangimpi.
Facilitating a Developing Township
Since establishing the Township Lease, there has been significant development activity within Pirlangimpi including;
- new staff housing (Government and commercial) such as Catholic Dioceses accommodation
- the hand-over of 10 community houses in the new subdivision
- subleasing of a further nine lots to NTG for future housing
