The pathway to a township lease

The township leasing model is only one of a number of land tenure options available to traditional owners. The role of the executive director and the OTL is to support traditional owners to understand what options are available to them under a township lease, how this is different from other land tenure arrangements and what impact that may have on their community.

Sacred sites and culture

Sacred sites in the Northern Territory are protected by both NT and Commonwealth laws, as well as township lease agreements. 

The office of township leasing and the executive director must ensure these sites are preserved, consult traditional owners, and prevent development that could harm culturally significant areas—even if the sites aren't formally registered.
