Mutitjulu is the Aboriginal Community located at the base of Uluru. The Community is located within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, of which the Anangu people of Mutitjulu are the Traditional Owners and joint managers. The majority of people in Mutitjulu are Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara with ties to Ngaanyatjarra people.

The Mutitjulu Traditional Owners agreed to a Township Lease in 2017. Because the community is within the National Park, the Executive Director holds a sublease from the Director of National Parks. The  67-year term of the Township Lease aligns with the National Park lease. Importantly, there is a clause within the Township Lease which allows for the transition of the lease to a community entity at a time of the Anangu's choosing.

A key priority for the Mutitjulu Traditional Owners following the signing of their Township Lease in 2017 was the development of a Business Centre. After a number of delays as a result of the COVID pandemic the multi-purpose Mutitjulu Business Hub was officially opened in July 2024.  

During negotiations for the Township Lease, Mutitjulu Traditional Owners expressed their vision for a dedicated office space and central hub for community activities. The lack of space for such activities meant that often important business was conducted away from the community, meaning people had to travel for business, excluding some and hampering local engagement. 

It was envisaged that the business hub would provide office space for the Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal Corporation (MCAC) and additional office and meeting spaces that are able to be let out to service providers and other businesses as required. This not only has increased service offerings in Mutitjulu, but is an additional income stream for MCAC who holds the lease over the facility. 

A Testament to the Community’s vision 

The opening of the Mutitjulu business centre marks a transformative moment for the community. It stands as a testament to their vision, resilience and ability to overcome barriers.

Housing Development to Commence 

It is equally satisfying to report progress on the construction of new housing, which was also negotiated by the Anangu Traditional Owners as part of the original Township Lease benefits package.  

Working closely with National Parks and the Northern Territory Government 12 lots have been identified with construction commencing on four houses in the first tranche of works. 

The commencement of works is an important step towards activating the potential of the Township Lease.
